RNDr. Katarína Bhide, PhD. -

Katarina obtained Master of Science at the University of Pavol Jozef Safarik in Kosice. She graduated from Zoology and Animal Physiology. She obtained PhD at The Department of Microbiology and Immunology of UVLF in the field of virology. Her focus is molecular biology such as real time PCR, sequencing, cloning and also cell cultivation.




MSc. Irene Jimenez Munguía, PhD  -

After concluding degree in Biopharmaceutical Chemistry in Mexico, Irene was awarded a grant from Fundación Carolina for studying the Master in Genetic, Molecular and Cellular Biotechnology. She obtained PhD. in Biomedicine at The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of The University of Cordoba in Spain. Mainly, she has been working in proteomics-based techniques to obtain vaccine candidates against pathogenic bacteria. In LBMI, Irene is focused on deciphering ligand-receptor interactions during meningitis caused by S. pneumoniae.






MVDr. Evelína Káňová -

Evelina obtained degree on General veterinary medicine on The University of Verinary Medicine and Pharmacy in Kosice in 2015. To obtain such degree, she was working on the detection of tick borne encephalitis virus based on molecular biology techniques in the Microbiology Department. Nowadays, she is in the second year of PhD studying host-pathogen interactions between Neurovascular Unit and N. meningitidis.



Mgr. Zuzana Tomečková -

Zuzana has studied Molecular Biology in Faculty of Natural Sciences, Comenius University in Bratislava. For her diploma thesis, she worked on Optimization and Introduction of newborn screening for immunodeficiency disorders using RT-PCR. In 2016, she started doctoral studies in LBMI of The University of Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy in Kosice wherein she will work on the analysis of cell response between cells of neurovascular unit and borrelia ligands.





Mgr. Ivana Sirochmanova -

Ivana obtained degree on Pharmacy at University of Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy in Kosice. In 2016, she started doctoral study in neurosciences at Laboratory of Biomedical Microbiology and Immunology for working on in vitro nanobody production against neuroinvasive Neisseria.

Rastislav Mucha, RNDr., PhD

(obtained doctoral degree in 2009 and worked in LBMI till 2012)

Alumnus of biochemistry of  University of Pavol Jozef Safarik in Kosice, acquired PhD  from University of veterinary medicine in Kosice, with specialization of immunology. Later, as a researcher, he participated on protein:protein  interactions between host and neuroinvasive pathogens.



Lucia Kišová-Vargová, DVM., PhD

(obtained doctoral degree in 2010)

Alumni  of University of veterinary medicine in Kosice, specializing in food hygiene. She acquired PhD from her alma mater in the  immunology. Now she is working in Immunology department of Medical faculty of University of Pavol Jozef Safarik in Kosice.


Stanislav Hreško, DVM, PhD

(worked in LBMI in 2011-2012)

Stanislav graduated in University of veterinary medicine in Kosice as a general veterinary doctor. After his studies, he continued in the same university as a doctoral fellow, and he got Phd from microbiology. Later he worked as an assisent and then as post-doc in University of veterinary medicine and pharmacy in Kosice.


Marian Maďar, DVM, PhD

(obtained doctoral degree in 2012)

Alumni of University of veterinary medicine in Košice. Acquired PhD. from Neuroimmunology department of Slovak academy of science and University of veterinary medicine in Košice. Main aim of the study: human complement system interacting with various tick-borne pathogens.


Patrik Mlynarčik, Mgr., PhD.

(obtained doctoral degree in 2013)

Patrik graduated from University of Pavol Jozef Safarik in Kosice in  ecology. Currently he is doctoral fellow in  University  of veterinary medicine and pharmacy in Kosice.

His  major interest is study of protein:protein interactions, which are responsible for borrelial translocation through blood-brain barrier.

Amod Kulkarni, PhD

Amod holds a position of researcher at the LBMI since April 2018. He obtained his PhD in Aquatic Bioscience from Nord University, Bodø, Norway in 2014. His research activities are directed to recognize the host – pathogen interactions in cells of neurovascular unit forming the Blood-brain barrier (BBB) and neuroinvasive pathogens like Neisseria meningitidis, Borrelia burgdorferi and West Nile Virus. Expert in high throughput genomics and proteomics techniques, phage display and production of nanobodies and BBB organoids. He is involved in EU funded projects - EuroNanoMed III (TJC2018-049), OBEMIRISK - GP/EFSA/ENCO/2018/03, and Slovak national projects - APVV-14-0218 and APVV-18-0259, He has published 20 articles in international peer reviewed journals with h- Index: 8.

Profesor emeritus. Former head of the department of microbiology and immunology. Worked in the field of innate immunity against various pathogens like Mycobacterium, IBR, Staphylococcus etc.

Ing. Martina Cepková

Martina graduated in Environmental Management at the Technical University in Kosice in 2010. Since 2002 she has been a laboratory assistant at the Laboratory of Biomedical Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy in Kosice.
